One of the reasons I took this course was that I wanted to challenge myself further. I wanted to experience more tactical-type scenarios and to get as close as I could to real-life defense situations. I wanted to be trained to the highest degree possible if I am ever placed in a real world situation where I would actually have to defend my family or myself with a firearm.
One of things that I liked about this course was that there was a limited amount of students at the time that I took it. This gave the range master flexibility as to the structure of the course and the material covered. He was able to customize the class to the student's needs and/or skill level; and we were able to repeat certain scenarios, if needed. One of the scenarios that I particularly liked was one in which you were placed in a situation with your eyes closed, told to open them, then had to react quickly in order to deal with it appropriately.
I also liked the environment of the class and of Front Sight in general. It was a relaxing environment with great instructors and shooters. There were approximately 25 -30 people in my class and four instructors, which provided a good opportunity to learn techniques not only from the instructors, but also from fellow students. We were also allowed to go through the Master Prep Skills Test, which also gave me a good idea of those class requirements.
One day of this class was spent on Martial Arts. Even though this part of the training was also excellent, this day was probably my least favorite day of the course. It wasn't that I disliked it; this was due [rather] to the fact that I have so much previous martial arts experience from the past that I like to concentrate on the firearms part of the training. My only suggestion for improving this day of the course is to possibly mix it up with some shooting.
Before I took course, I did not realize that we would be doing any support hand shooting. Hence, I did not have one with me. I would suggest that any first time students have any equipment necessary for support hand shooting. Also, because of the support hand shooting, I suggest that students prepare by doing some dry- practice with their support hand before they take this class. Students will also need a flashlight for the "Night Shoot".
I also suggest that students bring comfortable clothes for the martial arts portion, similar to something they would use at the gym.
Yes, I would suggest this course to others.
I drove from Northern California, which took approximately 8-9 hours.
I stayed at the Saddle West on this occasion and stay there most of the time. The accommodations and the prices are reasonable. I have stayed at one other hotel in town and stayed in Las Vegas once because there were no rooms available in Pahrump. On that occasion, the drives back and forth from Las Vegas to Pahrump took approximately 45 minutes.
I transported my own ammunition to Front Sight, but I do appreciate the convenience of the Ammo Bunker, in case I need to purchase more.
I brought lunch boxes from the Saddle West.

I am taking some friends to the 4-Day Defensive Handgun Course in April. I am going to shoot the entire class with my support side hand and eye.
